Description

UL 1746:2014 is a standard that covers pre-engineered corrosion protection systems for steel underground atmospheric-type storage tanks that are intended for flammable and combustible liquids. It outlines the different types of external corrosion protection systems that this standard pertains to such as galvanic-type cathodic protection systems, fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) composite systems, polyurethane (PUR), polyurea, high density polyethylene (HDPE) or fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) jacketed systems, and polyurethane (PUR) coated systems. These systems are intended to be factory installed on the exterior surface of the tank and tested for defects or leaks before shipment.

Moreover, the tanks covered by UL 1746:2014 are intended for installation and use in accordance with established fire and safety codes such as Standard for the Installation of Oil-Burning Equipment, NFPA 31; Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code, NFPA 30; Code for Motor Fuel Dispensing Facilities and Repair Garages, NFPA 30A; and International Fire Code published by the International Code Council. The standard specifies that the tanks are completely fabricated and inspected in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions before shipment. This standard helps ensure that steel underground storage tanks are protected against external corrosion that can lead to leakages or other safety hazards.
