Description

An constructed sandwich panel's core, core-to-face bond, or facing can have their flatwise tensile strength tested using the ASTM C297/C297M-16 standard. However, it can also be used to generate flatwise tensile strength data for structural design, material requirements, and research and development purposes. The test method is generally utilized as a quality control test for bonded sandwich panels. The standard can be used to generate flatwise tensile strength data for the core material and offers information on the strength and quality of core-to-facing bonds.

The facing material, core material, adhesive material, methods of material fabrication, facing stacking sequence and overall thickness, core geometry, core density, adhesive thickness, specimen geometry, specimen preparation, specimen conditioning, environment of testing, specimen alignment, loading procedure, testing speed, facing void content, adhesive void content, and facing vol. The test findings can be used to generate parameters like flatwise tensile strength by taking these considerations into account.

The standard can be applied to all kinds of permitted core materials with both continuous and discontinuous bonding surfaces, such as balsa wood, foams, and honeycomb. In the language of the standard, inch-pound units are indicated in brackets.
